Open burning is only allowed in certain zoning districts and during a period of time. Residents are required to comply with the Open Burning Ordinance; not adhering to regulations can result in a $1,549 service charge.
Things to remember:
- Open burning is NOT allowed in most residential areas; it is ONLY allowed in certain zoning districts with parcels of more than 3 acres.
- Open burning is NOT allowed when winds are greater than 9 mph.
- Open burning must NOT create a nuisance; if your neighbor complains that it is, it is.
- Open burning–in certain zoning districts only–is allowed only from April 1–May 31 in spring.
- Open burning–in certain zoning districts only–is allowed only from Sept. 15–Nov. 30 in autumn.
- Small recreational campfires are not considered open burning and are permitted, but please do so responsibly.
It is your obligation to read and understand the Open Burning Ordinance; it may save you $1,549.
