Job Opening: Planning & Zoning Administrator

Tyrone Township is accepting applications for the position of Planning & Zoning Administrator. The position is full-time Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will require evening meeting attendance. Planning and zoning experience preferred.

Planning & Zoning Administrator Job Description

The Planning & Zoning Administrator is responsible for a wide range of administrative, enforcement, and coordination duties to ensure compliance with the Township’s zoning ordinances and facilitate smooth departmental operations. Primary responsibilities include the following, but you may be asked to do additional duties:

Ordinance Administration & Enforcement:

  • Administer, interpret, and enforce Township ordinances.
  • Investigate alleged ordinance violations, advise landowners/applicants of corrective measures, and maintain documentation, including dated photographs and violation inventories.
  • Write violation notices and civil infractions when applicable.
  • Receive and investigate written complaints from residents; issue enforcement letters as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Township Attorney for enforcement matters and legal guidance.
  • Testify at public and judicial hearings, as necessary.

Permit & Application Review:

  • Review all land use applications for completeness and ordinance compliance, including:
    • Land use permits & waivers
    • Special land use permits
    • Variance requests
    • Land divisions, boundary realignments, and combination applications
  • Review site and construction plans to ensure compliance with Township regulations.
  • Serve as a member of the Land Division Committee.
  • Communicate with surveyors and other professionals regarding land division applications.
  • Maintain and organize records of all permits and associated documentation.

Public Interaction & Support:

  • Respond promptly to public inquiries via phone, email, and in-person visits.
  • Assist the public, applicants, developers, and their representatives on zoning matters.
  • Direct individuals to the appropriate agencies for additional permits.
  • Contact residents regarding outstanding requirements for various applications.

 Department & Staff Support:

  • Serve as a key support resource to the Director of Planning & Zoning.
  • Coordinate with the Livingston County Building, Health & Drain Departments, Road Commission, etc…
  • Keep the zoning department calendar updated to track deadlines and meetings.
  • Prepare agendas, public hearing notices, and meeting packets.
  • Communicate with planner(s), attorney(s), the Planning Commission, Township Board, and the Zoning Board of Appeals regarding applications and meetings.

Meeting Coordination:

  • Compose minutes for Planning Commission meetings and ZBA meetings.
  • Set up Zoom links for remote or hybrid meetings.
  • Set up the boardroom: operate recording equipment, charge microphones, prepare packets, place nameplates, and prepare sign-in sheets.
  • Attend and provide administrative support at Zoning Board of Appeals meetings and Planning Commission meetings as needed.

Data Management & Reporting:

  • Receive and update monthly reports including:
    • O&M report
    • Livingston County sewer report
  • Update Sewer Connection spreadsheet with connections and billing information.
  • Conduct and report monthly water meter readings for local businesses connected to the public sanitary sewer system.

Software & Technical Proficiency:

  • Utilize Microsoft Office, BS&A, GIS, and other Township software systems for documentation, communication, and recordkeeping.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Associates or bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience with local government or planning consultant preferred.
  • Experience with a PC and office equipment (Copier, printer, scanner, and video recording equipment)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) required. Familiarity BS&A software preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience required.
  • Willing to enroll in training courses as necessary.
