Open burning is only allowed in certain zoning districts and during a period of time. Burn permits are no longer issued, but residents are required to comply with the Open Burning Ordinance; not adhering to regulations can result in a $1,587 service charge.
Things to remember:
- Open burning must NOT create a nuisance; if your neighbor complains that it is, it is.
- Open burning is NOT allowed when winds are greater than 9 mph.
- Open burning of leaves and grass clippings is NOT allowed in the R-2, LK-1, MHP zoning districts.
- Open burning of leaves and grass clippings in other districts is allowed only from April 1-May 31 in spring and Sept. 15-Nov. 30 in autumn and on parcels of 3 acres or more.
It is your obligation to read and understand the Open Burning Ordinance. It may save you $1,587.
Please call the township office 810-629-8631 if you have any questions or need to know which zoning district you live in.
